Scientific Thinking and Research Methods

The course will help gain an understanding of the scientific method and how research in psychology, social sciences, and other related fields is planned, carried out, and communicated.


The students will get hands-on experience on doing a literature review, and starting their own research project. They will also get the opportunity to write an academic paper and understand how peer-reviewed publication processes work. Students will learn how to design experiments, and collect, analyze and interpret data.


Learning Objectives and Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will learn about:

  • Understand why research and scientific thinking are important
  • Understand how to read empirical research papers and articles and write a literature review
  • Be able to design your own experiment and take a research project from start to finish
  • Obtain knowledge about common statistical approaches taken in psychology and social sciences


Course Delivery

The course will be delivered hybrid with 22 hours of in-person lectures and 8 hours of online lectures. The in-person classes will also be made available online. Attendance in-person is recommended but not mandatory.

  • Content and reading list will be made available before the lessons, and we use a learning management system to upload materials.
  • Recordings of the sessions will be made available to the students for upto two weeks after the last course lecture.
  • Lectures will be for 2 hours or 2.5 hours (5-7pm or 5-7:30pm) every Tuesday.
