January 2024

Welcome the new year with a creative canvas!

Artwork of the month:

Harishchandra in Distress by Raja Ravi Varma

Raja Ravi Varma, a prominent Indian painter, is renowned for blending European techniques with Indian themes. He made fine arts accessible to the masses through affordable lithographs of his paintings. Celebrated for his religious artworks and epics, he was connected to the royal families of Parappanad and Travancore, Kerala, with his granddaughters integrating into the Travancore royal lineage.

According to one legend, King Harishchandra gave away his kingdom, sold his family, and agreed to be a slave – all to fulfill a promise he had made to the sage Vishvamitra. In this painting, RRV depicts Harischandra in Distress, having lost his kingdom and all the wealth parting with his only son in an auction.
